Business partners Ron Thomas and Chef Josh Oakley started The Smiling Bison as a food cart, then quickly progressed to opening a dive type of place in Orlando with a funky atmosphere and a loyal following.
But when they discovered Sanford, they knew what their destiny was. Open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, lunch Wednesday through Friday, and with a special Saturday Brunch Menu, The Smiling Bison has a full bar with Kelly behind the bar serving up some very unique craft cocktails.
The menu (both food and during) changes often at the Bison, as they use locally sourced, seasonal, fresh ingredients to the hilt. If you find something you really like, order it again and again, because when those fresh ingredients are no longer in season, it’ll be off the menu.
But don’t worry, something new and fantastic will take it’s place. A few staples remain, however, anchored by the Poutine (fries, Wisconsin cheese curds, mushroom gravy) and the signature Bison Burger. I recommend you order it medium rare—trust me on that!
And with the watermelon salad—if watermelon is in season. Reservations are recommended, especially on the weekends, but there’s often room at the bar—give it a try, you may make some new friends!
