  • A great restaurant requires far more than great food. It requires a great dining experience that stirs one’s emotions. It makes its community and points beyond a better place. It places the utmost importance on quality and ethical sourcing of its ingredients, its impact on the environment, and the well-being and personal success of its staff. By embracing creativity while honoring tradition, the Smiling Bison exists to be a great restaurant.

I have so many good memories at The Smiling Bison, from sharing a dessert with my mom at the bar to chowing down on 50-cent wings with my best friend. This place is hands-down one of downtown Sanford’s best gastropubs. My favorite starter is the biscuits. Since it’s a farm-to-table restaurant, the “flavor” of the biscuits may change but one thing stays the same: their mouthwatering honey mustard butter. (You can’t find that at your average biscuit place!)
For the main meal, I have in the past wolfed down their Duck Lovers Pizza. Let me say, where else can you enjoy pizza with duck ham?? The flatbread includes garlic puree and a duck egg. For drinks, I’m all about their guava margarita. It contains jalapeno-and-cilantro-infused tequila which gives it a delightful kick.
Overall, The Smiling Bison is a great place to be reacquainted with old favorites (biscuits, pizza, margaritas) but favorites that have a unique twist–something you can’t find anywhere else. Definitely treat yourself to this eatery.
